Flexible Jaw Type Couplings (L Series & Spider Elements)
A jaw coupling consists of two metal hubs and an elastomer (spider). The two metal hubs are generally 45-gauge steel, but the aluminum alloy is also used in cases where sensitive loads are required. The elastomeric jaw coupling uses the elastic element placed between the two halves of the coupling hubs to realize the coupling of the two halves of the coupling.
Flexible Jaw Type Couplings (L Series) are versatile power transmission components designed to connect drive shafts while absorbing rotational vibration and compensating for angular, parallel, and axial misalignments. A complete jaw coupling assembly consists of three components: two high-strength metallic hubs (available in sintered iron or grade GG25 cast iron) and an elastomeric insert commonly called a “spider.” Power is transmitted through the compressed elastomer lobes, isolating driven equipment from destructive shock loads.
Technical Construction & Spider Element Options
- Hub Material Options: Powder metallurgy / Sintered steel for compact sizes (L035–L075); High-tensile Cast Iron GG25 for medium and heavy-duty series (L090–L225).
- Elastomer Spider Inserts:
- NBR (Nitrile Rubber): Standard oil-resistant elastomeric element providing excellent flexibility and torsional damping (-40°C to +100°C).
- Urethane / Polyurethane: High-torque alternative offering increased chemical resistance and higher load capacity.
- Hytrel / Bronze: Designed for extreme torque requirements and elevated temperature applications.
- Failsafe Design: In the event of spider wear or failure, the interlocking jaw teeth remain engaged to prevent complete loss of drive (allowing emergency controlled shutdown).
Engineering Selection Tip: Standard L-Series jaw couplings are fail-safe by design. When sizing for electric motor or internal combustion engine drives, ensure the service factor accounts for startup frequency and peak shock loads to prolong NBR/PU spider service life.
