A tiller transmission works by providing the operator with a different speed to power through different types of terrain. The tiller can travel forward or in reverse depending on the gearbox, which is ideal for hard ground. The highest speed is for transporting the tiller, while the lowest speed is for chopping up hard ground. Different tiller designs use rubber belts and a series of pulleys to provide the proper speed.
