The chain’s working load limit depends on the manufacturer’s safety factor. For example, an G40 chain has a safety factor of 5:1, while an G70 has a safety factor of 3:1. The high strength of the G30 chain is equivalent to the performance of a short BBB chain. However, higher tensile strength means it is more expensive.
Another problem associated with a high-strength G70 chain is its complicated galvanizing process. This process leads to hydrogen embrittlement, which is caused by the deposition of hydrogen in the steel’s crystal lattice. Additionally, chain manufacturers warn against re-galvanizing G70 chains. However, independent sources report that the issue is sporadic and only affects high-strength chains.
